An Enthusiastic Vision

Margaret Anne Birtwistle, SSJ

My work as Director of Admissions at Chestnut Hill College from 1983 to 1997 provided me with many happy years and many more wonderful relationships. There were challenges, too, as enrollments in women’s colleges were declining. While I always received great support for my work, Sister Carol Jean Vale provided me with an enthusiastic vision for women’s education. Her energy, intellect, and good humor gave inspiration and encouragement for a time that needed it more and more. When her vision saw the right time for going co-ed, I knew that the decision was made with great thought, research, and planning. I knew that all the excellence and advantages of a Chestnut Hill College education would continue and grow even stronger.

Carol’s deep appreciation for the work of Admissions has always been a mark of her presidency. My deep appreciation for her and her inspiration will never end.
